Sunday 3rd March is New Zealand Children’s day, and it’s also the day of the wonderful Newtown Festival! Bring the kids along, there are lots of fun activities and entertainment for them, and some youth acts performing on the stages. There are street performers, circus artists, rock bands who have played at RockQuest, and young dancers & ukulele players to watch and enjoy!
In Donald McLean St kids can join in free street sports: experiment with parkour, play floor ball, basketball, and lots of other ball games, or play with skipping ropes, ring toss, frisbees, moon-bouncers for the little ones, and heaps more.
In Gordon Street and Gordon Place there are free street rides for littlies, and a mini Bike Rodeo for slightly older children! Rich and Jen from Wishbone Designs will set up a race themed street circuit in Gordon St, where your kids can play for free on locally-crafted balance bikes and wagons, and in Gordon Place the folk from the Rebicycle Trust have organised a fun stuff for bike riders such as a seesaw, balance boards and slalom – bikes and helmets provided.
Arney St is Fun Street! Bring the tamariki for a kid-focused chill-out vibe. We’ve got old favourites like a mini Merry Go Round and Ferris Wheel, and some inflatable recycling in the form of the mighty Black Sofa Jellybean. There’s a place for grown-ups to relax in the shade, free sunblock for all and family-focused stalls as well. Be creative with our chalk and tape art. And here is where you will find the wonderful Circus Hub Stage performances and exciting circus skills workshops. Come and check out Fun St, next to the RadioActive FM- Coffee Supreme South Stage, at the southern (zoo end) entrance to the Festival.
At the other end of the Festival in the St Anne’s grounds at the end of Emmett St, the Filipino village will include a carnival, with kid’s rides, roller ball, bouncy castles, big ape slides and more!
