Founded eight years ago, Gale Force Gospel grew out of a workshop held by well-known New Zealand Gospel song leader, Tony Backhouse and they continue to sing many arrangements written by Tony. With 50-60 members the choir welcomes singers without audition and regardless of previous experience, gender, religion or cultural background. An important part of the burgeoning community singing scene in the Capital, Gale Force Gospel is led by accomplished composer and choral leader Carol Shortis.

The choir perform regularly both locally and further afield, and have also been featured as part of a programme on Access Radio. In addition to their popular annual Wellington concert, they also perform for a variety of audiences at Futuna Chapel, Malvina Major Retirement Village and Rangiatea Church (Otaki). Gale Force Gospel have delighted pedestrians with performances at Civic Square, Courtenay Place and Wellington Railway Station among other public locations.

Larger events have included performances at the 2014 APRA Silver Scroll Awards and in 2015 Gale Force joined the Wellington Community Choir at the Michael Fowler Centre for their 10th anniversary concert, “Singing People Together”, and appear on the concert CD.

In 2016 the choir travelled to Tasmania as a performer in the Festival of Voices, Australia’s premier celebration of voice which attracts thousands of singers, choristers and music lovers from around the world. Most recently, they undertook a South Island tour which saw them singing with fellow choirs in Nelson, Christchurch, Lyttleton and Dunedin (and on the ferry on the way home!)

In terms of outreach and development, Gale Force Gospel enjoys a close relationship with and has performed with Kapiti Gospel Choir, Napier Gospel Choir and Sunny Side Up (Dunedin) among others and each year participates in the Featherston Festival of Choirs which is attended by choirs from throughout the Wellington region.
