Ria Hall announced for Newtown Festival 2019

Newtown Festival is thrilled to announce a very special performance by ‘korokoro tui’ Ria Hall to headline on the Tangata Whenua Stage (North Riddiford Street) for the upcoming festival on Sunday 3 March 2019.

Ria Hall will be performing songs from her award-winning album ‘Rules Of Engagement’, with band members and Newtown favourites Iraia Whakamoe, Ryan Prebble and James Coyle (members of The Nudge).

October 2017 saw the release of her highly anticipated concept album entitled ‘Rules Of Engagement‘, a work heavily based on the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s, and in particular the Battle of Gate Pā which took place in her tribal home land of Tauranga Moana. In its first week of release, it debuted on The Official New Zealand Music Charts at #1. Featuring appearances and production from Tiki Taane, Kings, Laughton Kora, Mara TK and Electric Wire Hustle, the album showcases Ria’s incredible talent as a vocalist and lyricist.

Ria Hall, with co-writers Tiki Taane and Te Ori Paki, won the 2018 APRA Silver Scroll Maioha Award recognising exceptional waiata featuring te reo Māori, for their song ‘Te Ahi Kai Pō’.

The Tangata Whenua Stage is proudly supported by and live streamed on Atiawa Toa FM. Download the Atiawa Toa FM app for android or Iphone, link is on their website.

Thanks to Loop.
