Songs From The Old Country (SFTOC) is a traditional music event series curated by Olivia Sumich and was presented at Newtown Festival for the first time in 2016. As a granddaughter of migrants from the former Yugoslavia, Olivia learned songs and dances from that area of the world in her youth and this event series is her way of connecting communities who can relate to the nostalgia a migrant family has for their ‘old country’.

As a series that takes place each year in different locations around Aotearoa, SFTOC provides a stage for migrants and their descendents to present music and dance from homelands left behind – wherever they connect back to – and brings together local musicians who keep that music alive on our islands. These performances are also offered as a means of catharsis and an opportunity to learn about the cultures connected to the music.

Any community musicians or professional musicians who play traditional music and are interested can contact Olivia via facebook to discuss performing at a future SFTOC.
