Steampunk Minstrels formed in Auckland with two other musicians, but Marius and Mairi-Anne moved to Wellington in 2018 and have played various open mic evenings in Newtown and Plimmerton and were also the featured artists at Acoustic Roots’ Roseneath evening and Songwriters 6021 at Moon with Charles Harter on violin and percussion.
Marius plays 12string acoustic guitar and sings; Mairi-Anne plays 12string, bass guitar, mandolin and sings. We play in the idiom of Maskandi/Mbaqanga music from the country of our birth, reminiscent of the wandering Zulu minstrels we remember from our childhood in South Africa and we are strongly influenced by Johnny Clegg’s brilliant interpretation of this genre, but with a strong Celtic flavour from Mairi-Anne’s Scots ancestry.
We have also been influenced by folk, rock and jazz and the blend is an interesting vehicle for telling the story of our common humanity, in search of meaning in this complex universe, finding joy wherever we can. Some songs tell stories, some ask questions and there is even a lullabye.
