Transistor are a New Zealand-based psychedelic rock band and recording project. Infusing their songs with traits akin to bygone eras, the trio conjure up their own bombastic, yet lush wall of sound.
Conceptualised as a solo-recording project by frontman Lochie Noble, in 2016 he released the debut self-titled EP, ‘Transistor’. The fuzz-driven collection caught the attention of alternative radio stations over New Zealand – including Radio Active.FM, 95bfm, RDU and more. During this period, a live group was developed with Riley Dick lending a hand to strengthen the spontaneous drum patterns. This development refined their sound, resulting in 2018’s follow-up release ‘Soft Burning Silver’. The 5-song collection reigned in the prominent distortion, showcasing developed songwriting and focused production.
Since then, with bassist Eli Polaczuk onboard, the three-piece have placed emphasis on the live show, extending and transforming the recorded material into sprawling, energetic and immersive experiences. This led to a slew of support slots over New Zealand – opening for international mind-melters such as Black Mountain (CAN), Earthless (US) and Heavenphetamine (JPN), as well as prominent national groups including Earth Tongue, Ha The Unclear, The Nudge, Miss
June and more.
As 2020 enters, Transistor’s yet-to-be announced debut album is underway. A full record is in the recording and mixing stage. The songwriting’s complexity is increased, and the sound is more thought-out and developed than ever – with the addition of layered synthesisers, electronic drums patterns and sound design bringing new flavours to Transistor’s core psychedelia.
"The psychedelic collection dives deep into an otherworldly realm of fuzzed out grooves and faded vocals, finding a great balance between shoegaze dreaminess and chugging garage rock heft."
