Max Maxwell has been a pivotal figure in New Zealand’s electronic music scene since the early 1990s. Emerging during the formative years of local electronic culture, he played a key role in landmark events such as Entrain and The Gathering, and co-founded the psychedelic trance project Matipo Pyramid, which released a self-titled album that became a touchstone of the era.

In 2001, Max’s solo career gained national recognition with Continuous Play, earning a nomination for Best Downbeat Album at the BFM Music Awards. His production and remix work was further acknowledged in 2002 with a Best Remix nomination for Trinity Roots’ Just Like You. These early milestones established him as an artist equally fluent in songwriting, production, and sound design.

Across more than three decades, Max has worked fluidly across genres including downbeat, drum & bass, house, and hip hop, driven by a consistent urge to explore rather than settle. Collaboration has remained central to his practice, from Matipo Pyramid through to long-standing creative partnerships with Carmel Courtney and Tyson Smith, alongside collaborations with artists such as Module.

Max has performed extensively in New Zealand and internationally, appearing in London alongside Pitch Black and Freq Nasty in the early 2000s, playing venues such as Vienna Dub Club, opening Australia’s Rainbow Serpent Festival twice, and appearing at major New Zealand festivals including Splore, Parihaka Peace Festival, and Kaikōura Roots Festival.

In July 2023, Max released Badgernomics, his third album in four years, debuting at number 7 on the New Zealand album charts. Over the past year alone, he has released an album and nine singles, continuing a creative trajectory defined not by legacy, but by sustained evolution.
