SARGAM was formed over a year ago through connections, old and new. We are a band of three young families, united by our passion for Indian classical and Fijian Indian folk music. SARGAM is an intergenerational affair. While on stage you may only see one generation of parents and children, in reality, some of the music we will perform has been passed down through our ancestors from Fiji and, and before that, from India. They were known as Girmitiyas (indentured laborers) and it is through their sacrifices and strength that we are performing. We always strive to honour our unique blended heritage.

Our band plays a number of Indian classical instruments: the sitar, tabla, and harmonium (or baja) are our three main instruments. Our aim is to connect the young generation with our heritage through music. Each music piece tells a story and we believe stories through music are powerful. We hope that this helps our Fiji-Indian New Zealanders identify with their heritage and educate the general public about the unique Fiji-Indian music.
